Aircraft

ILYUSHIN 76

The 4 200 km trip from Cape Town to the Ultima Antarctic Logistics Airbase in central Queen Maud Land usually starts aboard an Ilyushin 76 aeroplane. Up to 80 passengers or up to 20 tons of cargo in total can be transported by this four-engine cargo plane. BASLER TURBO 67

All flights within Antarctica are carried out by small propeller planes. Ski/wheel-equipped Basler Turbo 67 airplanes – an upgrade of the legendary Douglas DC-3 – are commonly used for flights to the South Pole, the mountains of Queen Maud Land, the emperor penguin colony of Atka Bay and to remote entry and exit points within the Queen Maud Land region, and beyond. This aircraft combines excellent short-airstrip capability with mission versatility in passenger and cargo transport. Up to 18 passengers or up to 2.5 tons of cargo can be transported by these sturdy planes.

TWIN OTTER

The smaller De Havilland Twin Otter is also widely used in Antarctica. It is known for its short takeoff and landing performance, and reliability. Flights on these small planes give Antarctic visitors unique opportunities to appreciate the vastness and beauty of the Antarctic landscape. Low cruising altitudes offer great views of vast glaciers, deep crevasses, pristine snow fields, rugged mountain ridges, blue shelf-ice cliffs and
huge icebergs.

Fuel Supply

We are cooperating with a wholesaler of petroleum products, licensed with the department of Mineral and Energy and a registered importer and exporter. This provides us with access to fuel licences for a range of fuel supply services which will complement our current offerings and provide you with more competitive pricing. Together, we are also investigating more environmentally friendly ways to store fuel in Antarctica.

We are now able to provide you with:

  • Aviation fuel, bulk or packaged, fuel into plane, aircraft defueling, other fuel , such as Polar diesel or low sulphur unleaded petrol
  • Fuel bunkering at Cape Town port
  • Fuel-related services and handling equipment, oils and greases, fuel tanks, and storage to meet your needs

Transport

Our fleet of specialised Vehicles

Snow mobiles and track-vehicles are commonly used to transport cargo and passengers over short distances. A network of designated routes, highly trained personnel and the efficient, economic use of vehicles increase the safety of overland transport and minimise the impact on the environment.

In 2008 the introduction of specially modified Toyota Hilux 4×4 vehicles made it possible to travel long distances overland. Satellite phones, VHF radio, GPS-units and a specialised radar system for crevasse-detection ensure maximum safety standards. Over the years, the cars have proved to be a reliable, fast, fuel-efficient, eco-friendly and comfortable means of transport for short routes in the area of the Schirmacher Oasis and longer distances on the Polar Plateau.

Communications

Commun-ications

A well-established communication and tracking system is of utmost importance for all Antarctic operations. Satellite phones and internet as well as HF and VHF radio allow for quick and hassle-free information transfer between all involved parties whether in Cape Town, at the airbase or in the field.

Real-time tracking of all planes, fixed communication schedules with all expeditions and dedicated communication personnel who are on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensure high safety standards, efficient logistic planning and short response times in case of an emergency.
